We often use Gym gloves while we train to hold a batter grip or comfort our hands with the heavy weights. It is with everyone that we all want to use the best equipment to train.

The use of gloves in the gym has a number of advantages and disadvantages. These depends on the person, the time of training and the type of exercise. So it is good to keep in mind the objectives we want to achieve at all times and the benefits of using or not the gloves.

At the training level, using gloves can have its advantages or disadvantages. However, I also want to talk to you from the point of view of health, and express impressions of a physiotherapist. Everyone who reads, values and makes the most appropriate decision for their particular case.

Benefits of wearing gloves in the gym

Comfortable

Prevent Pain in Hands

Help the joints

Provide Batter supports

They help to lift more weight

The gloves offer a more comfortable grip , allowing you to do the exercises in a slightly more pleasant way. This way they allow you to perform exercises that you could not do as well as without gloves, even lift more weight.

Not only do they make the grip more comfortable, avoiding the appearance of hardness in the hands or pain from the pressure of the dumbbells, but they also prevent the sweat from causing the hands to slip, giving greater firmness to the grip .

The gloves also offer protection to the joints . Some gloves, like those in the image above, also have a band to protect the wrist. This is useful especially in novices, or in exercises where the wrist joint is forced excessively.

Disadvantages of using gloves in the gym

Some Times Bare Hands are batter then Gloves

Like everything (or almost everything) in this life, the use of gloves can also have some drawbacks. Sometimes they are small, but you have to take them into account and assess at all times if it is worth using the gloves or it is better to do without them.

It is true that gloves allow a more comfortable grip and prevent sweat from slipping, but also make the grip more imprecise . In exercises that require a lot of control by the hand, the use of gloves will cause the movement to be clumsier, of less quality.

In addition to making the grip not so precise, some gripping force is also lost. By covering the dumbbell or bar directly with the hand, the fingers adapt better to the surface , allowing a more powerful grip and working more intensely.

Is it advisable to wear gloves in the gym?

From my point of view as a physiotherapist, the use of gloves is not a matter of whether or not: in each situation it may be convenient to train in one way or another. I will give you some examples.

In the training of the muscles of the forearm, biceps or triceps, especially using dumbbells, I think it is better not to use gloves , since this way the movement is more controlled and precise.

There are exercises where the gloves help grip and others where you can hold on better with your bare hand. It is a matter of trying and changing, doing each exercise with or without gloves after having tried the method that works best.

Machines, even many dumbbells, usually already have padded elements and ergonomic grips, which is why they are already comfortable to use and it is not necessary to use gloves. However, if we notice that the grip is too hard and we notice discomfort in the hands, it is better to use gloves.

Pro Tip

My advice is to always take the gloves to the gym and go putting or removing depending on the exercise to be performed. I think it’s good to use them because they give comfort to train and some protection to the joint, but I also think that it is good to get used to hands to hold naked, thus giving greater control over the exercise.

What do you think? Are you better at training with gloves or without them?
